SEVA 2026 Triangle Tessellation
The Third Annual SIGMAA-EM Sustainability and Environmental Visual Arts (SEVA) Exhibition
MathFest 2026 — Boston
The SEVA Triangle Tessellation Exhibition will be installed in the MathFest 2026 Boston Conference Exhibit Hall, August 5–8, 2026, on upright panels.
About the Exhibition
To better understand sustainability or environmental topics, visualizations are often helpful — such as satellite imaging of the polar ice caps, graphs of CO2 levels on Mauna Loa, the Recycle your attitude plastic water bottle sculpture, and the Crochet Coral Reefs collaboration. It is through art, photography, data visualizations, and other visual representations that people attempt to interpret and communicate the world and its largest challenges.
During MathFest 2025, the SIGMAA-EM displayed visual artworks that communicated sustainability or environmental issues in a community or our world. This year, we continue the tradition with a new tessellation shape.
The Diamond Shape
This year's SEVA entries will be two congruent isosceles right triangles, joined at their hypotenuses to form a square, rotated 45 degrees to create a diamond shape. Your final pair of triangles (square/diamond) will be printed with 7.5 inch sides.
Submissions should be oriented as a diamond (rotated square). The artwork should include the artist's name(s) and email address(es) in the diamond image/design.
Visual artworks created through collaborations are encouraged. Submissions must include sustainability or environmental content.
How to Participate
There are two ways to participate in the SEVA Exhibition:
- Upload online before June 1, 2026. Submit your SEVA math artwork diamonds using the Google Form. SEVA entries will be printed by SIGMAA-EM on 8.5 x 11-inch cardstock, cut out, and assembled (tessellated) with other artworks for display at MathFest 2026. There is no physical shipping of artworks.
- Create and submit entries onsite. MathFest 2026 Conference attendees can create and submit entries at the MathFest 2026 exhibition area.
You can submit up to three diamond-shaped SEVA artworks. Please complete a separate Google Form for each submission.
You will need a Gmail account to use the Google Form. If you do not have one, please email Bronna Butler at Butlerba3@gmail.com for assistance with your submission.
Creating Your Artwork
You can create your diamond artwork in several ways:
- Hand-draw your diamond-shaped artwork, photograph it digitally, and upload the photo file
- Create a digital design using Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, or Excel (cropping instructions)
- Use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or software apps like Canva
By submitting your online application, you agree to allow your artwork to be shown with, and to appear in photographs of, the 2026 SEVA Triangle Tessellation. The Exhibition will be available on the SIGMAA-EM website.
