Annual Business Meeting Minutes

Tuesday January 14th, 2010

• 21 attending. Officers: Natasha Speer, Eric Hsu (recording), Nicole Engelke, Stacy Brown.
• 1. Incoming Coordinator, Secretary, and Program Chair
• 2. Collegiate Mathematics Education Journal Update
  • MAA Executive Committee approved moving ahead with the journal;
  • We are applying to NSF to secure funding for the first 3 years;
  • CMERJ will be an online journal;
  • An inaugural issue out this calendar year (ambitious hope).
  • Questions can be directed to Karen Marrongelle, Chris Rasmussen, or Pat Thompson.
• 3. RCME 7 Update and Future
  • Old Report: RCME 7 will be out in 2011, hopefully during the first quarter of the year. We have been working with the AMS to smooth out glitches that have held up the issue.
  • Update: Shandy Hauk says it will be out first quarter of 2010. Maybe RCME 8 articles accepted could be rolled over to CMERJ.
  • Update: Annie Selden says RCME was a publication of CRUME committee (AMS, MAA, NCTM, AMATYC). Responsibility passed on to SIGMAA on RUME. AS opines that CBMS is too hard to work with. Too much turnover at CBMS, so they forget promises or that reviews have been done, etc.
• 4. Treasurer Report (Nicole)
  • MAA keeps $3 out of $12/member dues. They say they're spending $6/member.
  • We are solvent.
  • Question about what the $4,000 for RCME was. Nicole will look into it.
  • We have a nice $22K carryover from spending down Exxon Mobil money.
• 5. Bylaw/Charter changes
  • Look for an announcement of bylaw and charter changes coming through on the listserve in the next week. The changes involve combining the current bylaws and charter into one single document, a charter. The MAA suggested we do this to be more consistent with the other SIGMAAs. We will vote on them at the RUME Conference in NC.
• 6. Mentoring Committee report
  • The Mentoring Committee produced a report of RUME mentoring activities and opportunities for further supporting mentoring. The report will be published on the website. Encourage everyone to take a look at it.

  • Three working groups: limits, proof, novice college math instructors
  • MAA now handling registration. We now take credit cards, etc. Great job so far.

  • Discussion
    • Q: should preliminary reports be allowed for projects not yet done?
    • Q: should we give the review feedback to proposal authors?
  • We'll have a panel at CRUME to discuss these issues.
• 8. Announcement about MathFest
  • Encourage mathematician colleagues to attend.
  • In 2010, Keith Weber will be running a workshop on proof.
