| ARUME Nominating Committee Report, January 21, 2000 |
Because the bylaws do not specify any qualifications, even ARUME membership, in order to be nominated and serve as an officer of ARUME, the Nominating Committee first discussed this issue and decided that nominees should be members of ARUME.
Then, as required by the bylaws, the Committee members made a concerted effort to obtain more than one nominee for each office. This was done through individual solicitations, announcements at the ARUME Conference in September and several calls for nominations posted to the ARUME listserv beginning in September 1999. A deadline of November 8, 1999 was set for the receipt of nominations.
The following persons agreed to being nominated for
the following offices.
Coordinator-Elect: Marilyn Carlson, Barbara Edwards
Secretary/Treasurer: David Meel
Program Director: Julie Clark
Organizational Director: Mickey McDonald.
The Nominating Committee then asked each of the above nominees to prepare a statement of at most 300 words, discussing what each candidate thinks are the most important goals for ARUME during the upcoming two-year period. Nominees were also asked to describe their scholarly, research, and teaching background as related to those goals. A deadline of December 10, 1999 was set for receipt of these statements.
Then the names of these candidates and their statements were posted on the ARUME listserv several times, beginning at least one month prior to the date of the election, as required by the bylaws. ARUME members were also reminded that the election would take place by secret ballot at the January 2000 business meeting and that nominations could be made from the floor of that meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Annie Selden, Chair
Nominating Committee
