Those in Attendance
Forty-one people attended the meeting. Their names, school affiliations and email addresses are at the end of the minutes.

Reception
The meeting began with a reception.

Welcome/Chair’s Report
Dex Whittinghill, chair, welcomed everyone and opened the meeting with a brief history of the formation of the SIGMAA on Statistics Education from the first Isolated Teachers of Statistics Meeting (ITSM) in 1998 to the approval of the SIGMAA on Statistics Education by the MAA (May 2000).

Treasurer’s Report
Dex Whittinghill, chair, gave the treasurer’s report in KLD Gunawardena’s absence. Dex reported that as of the middle of December, there were 170 paid members. The dues are $10 a year, and it was noted that if an MAA member had paid their MAA dues for two years they probably did not receive a notice to join a SIGMAA.

Old Business
A. Elections
Dex Whittinghill deferred to the elected past-chair, Allan Rossman, who presented the following motion that was distributed via email to members and potential members of the SIGMAA on Statistics Education before the New Orleans meetings.

Motion: Since 2000 has been a planning year in which our SIGMAA has been established, the past-chair proposes that the officers that were elected in January 2000 be re-elected for the year 2001. Chair: Dex Whittinghill
Chair-Elect: Mary Sullivan
Secretary: Ginger Holmes Rowell
Treasurer: KLD Gunawardena
Past-Chair: Allan Rossman
It was noted that all future elections will be conducted via email and that the onus is on the SIGMAA member to ask for a paper ballot.

Bob Hogg seconded the motion and moved that we passed the motion unanimously. There was no discussion and the motion passed.

B. Treasurer and Secretary Terms
Dex Whittinghill, chair, made the following motion for the terms for the secretary and treasure. Motion: The treasurer's term will be for 2001, and the secretary's term will be for 2001-2002. Thus, next fall we will elect a new Chair-elect and a new Treasurer. In the following fall, we will elect a Chair-elect and Secretary.

Pat Humphrey seconded the motion. There was no discussion and the motion passed.

C. Member Services
The 2000 officers asked for input regarding what the Statistics Education SIGMAA members hoped to receive for their dues. Previous input from the final meeting of IsoTeaStat's meeting at the 2000 Joint Mathematics Meeting provided ideas of a newsletter and web page.

Francisco Alarco'n will serve in the role of developing the web page for this SIGMAA, though the official title and responsibilities are yet to be determined. His email address is falarcon@grove.iup.edu

Suggestions for electronic services and other services that the Statistics Education SIGMAA can provide are listed below. They are organized (roughly) for your convenience.

New Business
A. Miscellaneous Announcements
Dex Whittinghill asked for the members to let him know by email what the regular business for the meeting would be. He said this has worked well in the past.

Dex read from the charter items that are related to Outreach and Liaisons. Below are the members' suggestions for groups to which the Statistics Education SIGMAA can be a liaison and provide outreach.

Liaisons to

Outreach to Dex Whittinghill announced that Steve Blasberg (West Valley College, Saratoga, CA) has volunteered to start the outreach/liaison work for AMATYC in Northern California where there are about 400 AMATYC members. This is especially important since Introductory Statistics is the second most frequently offered math course in two year schools in this area.

Mary Parker gave the following web address for the new curriculum recommendations for offering a statistics major, minor, and/or concentration. The document is called the Undergraduate Statistics Education Initiative (USEI) for promoting undergraduate statistics to improve the workforce of the future: www.amstat.org/education/usei.html

John McKenzie (Babson College) encouraged everyone to read two reports, and he emphasized the importance of people in this group providing feedback. The first report is the Committee for Undergraduate Program in Mathematics (CUPM)'s "Mathematics and the Mathematical Sciences in 2010: What Should Students Know?" (www.maa.org/news/cupm_text.pdf) and the second report is the CRAFTY project. John indicated that Tom Moore (Mooret@grinnell.edu) is the contact.

Dex Whittinghill closed the meeting by encouraging those who could to meet for dinner.
