SIGMAA Stat Ed Meeting and Reception

Held in San Diego, CA from 5:45 pm to 7pm

 

Welcome, Introductions, and Reception  

            SIGMAA Chair Chris Lacke welcomed everyone in attendance and introduced Pat Humphrey, chair-elect.  Chris thanked the W. H. Freeman Company for their contribution to help defray the cost of the food for the reception.  Everyone was invited to partake of the refreshments. Also, everyone in attendance was asked to introduce him or herself and sign the attendance sheet.  Michelle Everson announced that she will be teaching an online course at the University of Minnesota.  The course is on becoming a teacher of statistics and was developed by Joan Garfield.  If anyone is interested they can get in touch with Michelle at the Univ. of Minnesota.   Her email is gaddy001@umn.edu.

 

Approval of Minutes from Business Meeting of 1-6-07

            Copies of the 2007 meeting minutes were distributed.  A motion to approve the minutes was made by Dex Whittinghill and seconded.  The minutes were unanimously approved.

• The number of members is declining and so our income is declining.
• We would like to have more students doing presenting statistics posters at the Joint Mathematics Meetings.  We have not been using the money set aside for a TA award.  Perhaps this money could be used for an award for the best student statistics poster. 
• Mathfest has a contributed paper session on “Teaching Mathematics and Statistics through Current Civic Issues.” 
• We need to send at least one hard copy mailing to all of the members each year.  This needs to include information on the elections and how to get a hard copy ballot.

A motion was made to approve the Treasurer’s Report by Dorothy Anway and it was seconded by Dex Whittinghill.  The report was unanimously approved.

 

Election Results

• Chris announced the election results.  Dorothy Anway is the treasurer-elect and becomes treasurer as soon as the meeting is over.
• There was a tie in the election for chair between Don Bentley and Michael Posner.  At the SIGMAA officers meeting we found out that there were two possible ways to decide the chair:

1.      flip a coin,

2.      have a revote since the MAA was not able to run the election until December and many members did not vote.

Mary Parker made a motion to revote and it was seconded by John McKenzie.  There was a majority in favor of a revote and so we will have the MAA conduct another election for chair.  There will be a postcard mailing letting everyone know about the new election.

 

Pat Humphrey (chair-elect)

Pat conducted a survey of the membership. 

• One problem is that the business meetings and receptions of many of the SIGMAAs conflict.  She found that among the 61 members responding more people were also members of the QL SIGMAA than any other.  RUME is the SIGMAA with the second highest number of members in common with our SIGMAA.
• There is interest in Contributed Paper Sessions on in-class activities, projects, K-12 statistics class and teacher preparation, the second statistics class and probability courses for mathematics majors.
• There is interest in Panels on hiring, promoting and keeping statisticians in mathematics departments, Excel and exploratory data analysis and appropriate and inappropriate techniques.
• Some of the activities that members are interested in are: working with K-12 teachers, workshops, having a presence at section meetings.  (There will be a special session on statistics at the Southeastern Section Meeting.)

·         We need good ideas for the 2010 meetings.  The deadlines are moving up and the proposals for next year’s contributed paper sessions have already been submitted.  They are Contributed Paper Session:  I Found it on the Web! - web-based resources for statistics education  and Statistics in K-12 Education - What Can/Should We do to Help? How Will it Affect Statistics at the College Level?  Panels:  Hiring, Tenuring, and Promoting Statisticians in a Mathematics Department and Technology in Statistics Education: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

• We need items for the Newsletter.  It will be sent out early in the fall, just before the October elections.  (Adam Mulnar, amolnar@bellarmine.edu, will be the Newsletter editor.)  Dex asked if it can be e-mailed or posted on the webpage.  Pat answered that we can do that and send a postcard with the information about elections and how to get a hard copy of the newsletter for those without web access. 

 

• Paul Pasles has been the webmaster and now Dov Chelst has taken over.  Paul was thanked for his service.

 

Chris Lacke (current chair):

• Andy Sterrett Is interested in having the SIGMAA do a collection of papers from the previous five years for a volume of the MAA Notes.  The papers can be in Word.  Chris will be an editor but he wants help.  They will be soliciting papers between now and June.  Dex commented that the talks will need to be filled out and made into papers.  This will be referred.

 

Dex Whittinghill Best Contributed Paper Award

Dex Whittinghill presented the 2007 Dex Whittinghill Best Contributed Paper Award plaque to Robin Lock for his presentation of “What is ?  Using Dynamic Graphs to Illustrate Ideas in Regression.”

 

New Business

• Don Bentley has been a member of the MAA Committee on the Profession but is no longer.  When the Guidelines for Programs and Departments in Undergraduate Mathematical Sciences were written he was a member of this committee.  The original document needed some work to include statistics.  The ASA paid attention and the document was revised and approved in 2003.  Now the Committee on the Profession does not have a statistician and so we will need to pay careful attention so that the needs of statisticians are not overlooked.  We should all look at the present guidelines to see if anything needs to be changed.  There will be a new version after comments are received on the current version.
