SIGMAA Stat Ed – Business Meeting, January 17, 2014
Welcome – Scott Alberts, Chair
á Why do we have a full dinner? One of changes this year to the
way MAA manages SIGMAAs work is that we can no longer carry surpluses forward,
so we are eating the surplus!
á Introductions of attendees.
á Introduction/description of SIGMAA Stat Ed for new
attendees.
á Introduction of incoming officers – Patti Lock
(Chair-Elect), Stacey Hancock (Treasurer), Randy Prium
(Chair), Judith Canner (Secretary - continuing), Todd Iverson (Webmaster -
continuing)
á Thanks to retiring officers – Andy Zieffler
(Past-Chair), Kim Roth (Treasurer)
á Approval of last yearÕs minutes.
TreasurerÕs Report –
Kim Roth
á We are no longer in charge of our own budget. Our best guess
is that we have between 240-260 members, and we get $10 of the $12 membership
fee from each. MAA will cover any expenses that are not ÒunusualÓ.
á TreasurerÕs job is now really just filling out reimbursement
forms.
á We will wait until transitioning off having a surplus to
discuss whether or not to combine Treasurer and Secretary positions.
á Usually we would approve a budget, but no need now that MAA
has taken over our budget.
á We should start bringing in an invited speaker since that is
not an ÒunusualÓ expense.
Announcement - Andy Zieffler
á Announcement that McGraw-Hill discontinued Tinkerplots. Bill Pegram and Cliff
Konold are trying to buy back their intellectual
property rights. McGraw-Hill has agreed to give free licenses for courses this
semester only. Andy will send email to our membership list (and isostat and other lists) with information for who to email about getting Tinkerplots.
á Since Tinkerplots is linked
through internet, it will stop working in a year if
you already have it installed.
Other Reports and Upcoming Initiatives - Scott Alberts
á SIGMAA-Stat-Ed just finishing being
reviewed. We will receive draft soon. All good
news.
á Things to think about:
o Reviewing executive positions (changing leadership
structure):
¤ combine treasurer and secretary positions
¤ need more members on executive committee (mentioned in review)
¤ chair having four-year position (chair-elect one year, chair two
years, past chair one year)
¤ add Òawards chairÓ
o Clarifying review process for selecting Hogg award –
Email Òspirit of the awardÓ description to math departments. Purpose is
two-fold: (1) recognize newer people to statistics that may have come from
math, (2) recognizing people who have ÒgrownÓ.
o Adding invited speaker to JMM program, especially ones that
would attract people outside of our circle.
á MAA is celebrating centennial in 2015, and many sections
have been encouraged to having an event (though SIGMAAs were not really
included in process). But if we want to do something, we should submit ideas
now. Ideas?
o Steve Stigler from University of Chicago might be good
speaker on the history of statistics.
o Create document on the overlap between stats and math
history.
o Future history of Statistics – envisioning what the
next 100 years of statistics might be like.
o History of statistics education.
o ÒChallenges and opportunities for the next 25 years in
statisticsÓ – panel at JSM. Could also do one looking forward.
o Scott will send out solicitation to membership list asking
for volunteers to think about an event.
á Mathfest – ideas for events or panel discussions/programming
at Mathfest 2015?
Discussion –
Scott Alberts
á Should we promote Statistics Reform more widely? If so, how?
How can we get colleagues who are not trained in statistics but are teaching
statistics on board?
o Workshop or session at Mathfest
specifically designed for mathematicians who are teaching statistics.
¤ We had a panel of mathematicians that crossed over to
statistics at the last Mathfest. Should keep this
panel going.
o Short course for Project NeXT group – good group to
reach since they are at the beginning of their career. Many might be ÒstuckÓ
teaching statistics in a math dept if no one else wants
to.
o Speak to ÒChairÕs WorkshopÓ at JMM.
o Being more pro-active to get people to join our group
– at least one person from every school. Goal – get someone from
every Math Dept (that teach statistics) to be
involved in statistics education.
o MAA Minicourse – we had 3
for JMM, but none scheduled for Mathfest. (Too late
to schedule now, but could think about for Mathfest
2015.) Beginning course – overview of what to teach in an intro stat
course.
¤ Contact a local statistician whereven
Mathfest will be held (who doesnÕt have to travel),
but could do one-day workshop.
o Advocate towards training people who are teaching Common
Core, and seeing it through. Make sure we have contacts with Math Ed people.
Reach out to local high school communities.
o Looking at assessment tests being developed and make sure
they correctly reflect statistics in the curriculum.
o Session (rather than a minicourse)
on beginning intro stat curriculum for people new to teaching intro stat
– ÒMini workshopÓ = 1 hour and 20 minutes at JMM. Eliminate need to sign
up in advance and pay money. Specifically market it to people relatively new to
teaching intro stat or want to revise the way theyÕre teaching intro stat.
o Need to think very creatively about getting materials out to
high school teachers. Not many teachers come to meetings and have little time
and little money. Think about ways to offer continuing education – online
resources? Critical for K-12, intro stat level college teachers, and community
colleges.
¤ High school teachers are required to do continuing ed, but get more points for doing it in-state through their
state teacherÕs societies.
¤ Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation ran workshops
of four high school teachers trained in statistics who went on a summer tour
doing a one-week workshop on how to use statistics in all high school math
classes. Get funding so teachers donÕt have to pay.
Announcement - John
McKenzie
á CUTM Meeting this evening Room 347 – constructing
guidelines for all math departments on curriculum. Important to pay attention
to. If youÕre a math major, a possible course you should take is Òapplied
statisticsÓ – but this idea is being ignored. Need to put more pressure
on them to put statistics into math major curriculum
Awards – Scott Alberts

Award for Best Statistics Education Contributed Paper at JMM 2013 was awarded

Statistics was awarded to Johanna Hardin from Pomona College, introduced by Gizem Karaali.
