Who we are
POMSIGMAA is the Philosophy of Mathematics Special Interest Group of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). We are a part of the MAA. MAA members who are interested in philosophy of mathematics are welcome to join.
Since POMSIGMAA is a part of MAA, it naturally consists mainly of mathematicians interested in philosophy more than philosophers interested in mathematics, but both are welcome.
The focus of POMSIGMAA is areas of philosophy that relate to mathematics, other than technical work in logic and set theory (which is already covered by the Association for Symbolic Logic).
Our interests range over a wide range of philosophical issues. For instance:
- The nature of mathematics and mathematical knowledge,
- How we justify mathematical statements,
- The status of mathematical objects,
- Whether mathematics is independent of our knowledge of it,
- The aesthetic and ethical aspects of mathematics,
- The applicability of mathematics,
- And many others.
